With its central position in the middle of Europe Germany is a hub for international air transport. From Germany there are flights connecting to all regions of the world. A significant proportion of the international transfer traffic in Europe is handled at German airports.
Germany as an air transport location has been able to undergo dynamic development in past years. The latest enlargement of the European Union (EU) to Eastern and Southern Europe in 2004 gave an additional impetus to this development. Not least through the liberalisation of the internal market launched in the EU since 1993 has it been possible to remove barriers.
In Germany aviation administration is undertaken by the Federal Government and the federal states. The participation of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development in European and international air transport bodies is a key part of this administrative work.
