In Mumbai today, the Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Development, Peter Ramsauer, opened the "Indo-German Urban Mela" exhibition. This exhibition is being staged as part of the Year of Germany in India, which is called "Germany and India 2011-2012 – Infinite Possibilities" and will run until the autumn of 2012. The exhibition will be in Mumbai for ten days before it starts its tour of India. After Mumbai it will move on to Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Pune.
Ramsauer:
"Throughout the world, cities are key places for innovations, for social and economic developments. It is here that energy and climate change issues will be resolved, and it is here that future generations will live together side by side. The developments in cities pose a challenge to planners, industry, policymakers and the public authorities. An exchange of ideas and experience on the framework for innovation and development is thus becoming increasingly important."

The theme of the exhibition is StadtRäume – CitySpaces. It focuses on the consequences of worldwide urbanization and the challenges faced by major urban areas. It addresses aspects such as mobility, energy, sustainable urban development, architecture, education and urban art using media from the visual arts, science, education and research.
The German pavilion displays fields for the city of the future and shows the multiplicity of urban action areas: from urban planning through the impressive achievements of German architects and engineers to more energy-conscious building, taking the plus energy house as an example.
Ramsauer:
"The Year of Germany is an excellent example of the interaction between business, culture, society and government. These are the four spheres that are crucial to economically strong, sound, ecological and social urban development. Here, the criteria and strengths of German urban development are interwoven with our skills in solving technological problems. We are committed to good and reliable cooperation and a strong partnership with India in order to ensure sustainable growth, modern technologies and progress."
