Trends and Determinants of Travel Behavior in the USA and in Germany

Despite similarities between Germany and the USA regarding factors like per capita income, standard of living, industrialization and the importance of the automotive industry for the national economies we observe extreme differences in the travel behavior of the population. Although the big trends are similar, the decisive differences can be seen; they seem to be persistent and this study wants to contribute to their understanding in order to deduct conclusions for planning.

The Federal Government's Freight Transport and Logistics Masterplan is a strategic approach containing concrete measures for the future direction of freight transport. A modern industrial and service economy based on the division of labour and a successful business location cannot function without an efficient transport system. Current studies forecast a growth in tonne kilometres of around 70 percent between 2004 and 2025. Closely linked with this growth are environmental and climate change challenges. Today, already, transport is responsible for around 20 percent of CO 2 emissions and accounts for around 70 percent of total petroleum consumption.

It informs interested experts on climate projections and possible changes in the waterbodies in order to be able to further guarantee and develop the performance of navigation and waterways in sea, coastal and inland areas as the most environmental-friendly mode of transportation. This will also help to achieve the climate protection aims that have been set.

Opportunities for being mobile are critical in determining individuals' participation in society and hence also their social and professional development. The overriding significance of this integration-related objective becomes particularly clear in the transport sector, for some 20 percent of the total population of Germany are people with mobility problems, such as the elderly, the physically handicapped or perceptually impaired, or people with pushchairs or heavy luggage.
