The Federal Government regards local public transport as a particularly important element in ensuring sustainable mobility. Buses and trains not only reduce individual transport in conurbations and guarantee equal social conditions in the various regions. They also make important contributions towards relieving strain on the environment and reducing climate change emissions.

Today, around 27 million people make use of local public transport every day, thereby lowering the number of passenger car journeys undertaken by 19 million per day.

Nevertheless, customer-friendly, efficient local public transport still has the scope to further increase its market potential versus its main competitor, the passenger car.

One important aspect is the provision of reliable, financial parameters. At around 8.5 billion euros per annum, the Federal Government makes a central contribution towards achieving this.
